Riddle me this

Post by Flanker » Thu Feb 27, 2003 2:07 pm

Three men walk into a hotel and ask for a room for the night.

The clerk tells them its 30$ a night.

Each man decides to put in 10$ each to pay for the room.

The clerk takes the 10$ from each man and settles the bill of 30$.

The men wonder up to their room, and the clerk remembers that room only cost 25$.

The clerk asks the bell boy to take 5$ up to the men in the room.

The bell boy takes the 5$ and ask for five 1$ bills so change will be easier.

The bell boy being the smart little man that he is, knows that the men dont know the room only cost 25$ so he takes 2 of the dollars and pockets them, and gives each of the three men 1$ each.

So now each of the men now have 1$ back meaning out of the original 10 they paid they got 1 back. Simple math says that each man only paid 9$ each.

So riddle me this, each man paid 9$. 9*3=27
The bell boy has 2$

27+2=29

Where is the extra dollar?

Your answer close, is still wrong, as the question of the riddle is where is the missing dollar since each man got back 1 dollar each meaning the only paid 9 dollars to begin with.
with 9*3= 27 and bell boy keeping two that = 29, where is the dollar?

Riddle Two
A man wanted to enter an exclusive club but did not know the password that was required. He waited by the door and listened.

A club member knocked on the door and the doorman said, "twelve." The member replied, "six " and was let in. A second member came to the door and the doorman said, "six." The member replied, "three" and was let in.

The man thought he had heard enough and walked up to the door. The doorman said ,"ten" and the man replied, "five." But he was not let in.

Riddle me this, what should have he said?

There is no extra dollar.

The bellhop gave back 1 dollar to each man. $3. He then gave himself 2 dollars.

3(to the men) +2 (to himself) = 5. $5 (paid back to various people) + $25 (paid to hotel) = $30.

The 2 dollar tip should not be added to the total price, but subtracted. ($27 - $2 = 25$)

Three. The answer is the number of letters of the word that the doorman said. TWELVE is 6 letter. SIX is 3 letters. TEN is 3 letters . . .

Solution to the 1st riddle

There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

Here is an easy one for the people who can't think about numbers this time of the morning.

***************************************************

There are three words in the English language that end in -gry. One is hungry and one is angry; what is the third?

Flanker cannot answer as he already knows it . . .

The answer is there is no extra dollar. Math trickery.

((10*3)-30+(5-2))/3=how much money each man ends up with

5-3=The bell boys money

Paying 25/3 = 8.3333333333333333333333333333333

5/3 = 1.6666666666666666666666666666667

so, like I said the first time: Each got back one dollar leaving 6666666666666666666666666666667 from each person that the bellboy kept.

6666666666666666666666666666667*3 = 2

Don't make me come over there. You made me use a calculator for this answer.
