Look for somethign with a Dolby 5.1 label on it, digital sound is great.

basically the type of receiver you get is best determind by several factors...
#1 how much you can tell the difference in the sound.
#2 what equipment you currently own and plan on integrateign inot the system (do they have same same type of plugs and can you figure out how it works)
#3 how loud can you and or your landlord/neighbors handle it... becuase soem custom systems can have great sound quality.. but it miught not show up untill around 60 decilbles
and #4, how much can you afford.

basically your best bet is to go to your local audio visual store (preferrably not cuircut city) and brows by yourself for a little bit... talk to a slaesman and be very clear abotu what you are lookign for and what information you would like to know that you already dont. If you dont follow all fo the above steps before you walk onto that sales floor....you might end up with a 5,000 waste of amperage.

From what I have read and heard both Denon nad NAD are good systems. I personal like Harman Kardon products, but that's just me. But the best way to diecide is to hear them for your self. Along with the suggestions that Phred made I would also make you get a system that you can grow with, i.e. lots and lots of inputs, you never know when you made need to add some thing new to it.

I use a patchwork quilt of alot of differnt component...Sony, Emmerson, Teac, Samsung, Yamaha, Harmon Kardon, Kenwood, and about 1,700 chunks of old systems soddered together.

That and what I liek to call "The Box". when ever one of the investors in "The Box" arnt useign it I get to keep it :) aka.. its a concert stereo system with a really really really big bank of amps. and it can wake up a 3 mile radius at half vlume. :)

but the NAD system can be upgraded to dolby 7.1

and both have DTS and dolby EX and other stuff
price diff on them is 350$ where NAD is the most expensive...

Our receiver is a Harman Kardon ... Works fine and they don't run as hot as the older ones did.....
