Hurricane Prep

Post by Panzerfaust » Sun Oct 23, 2005 3:54 pm

My not be on today -- prepping for hurricane. It's supposed to be a Cat 1 or maybe 2 when it hits, but as we learned from last year, there is no such thing as over-prepping. :)

Especially, when you have a family to worry about.

Doubt it being a 1-day project.

Probably have to drill new holes for the window boards since the old ones are likely worn-out from overuse.

Good thing though, the sand bags are all still where they were after the last 3 shebangs.

Update: At least this hurricane is supposed to move through the state very quickly after she made landfall this morning in south Florida. I think the news site was quoting 125 miles an hour winds at the time landfall happened down in south Florida.

Panz, Keeb, me, and some others are pretty far away from the storm right now, but we do have some LDers in the storm's neighborhood. :( Even as far up north as where I live the news is still talking about gusts of wind up to 90 mph (150 kph for our European friends :) I think my math is right  ). Hurricanes are fun!

She'll blow over soon and then we can be back to playing normally again soon, hopefully.

Our pool overflowed. :) I was draining it and forgot about it :) Now, it's a couple inches low. Thank God I did it later in the evening. :)

We had some damage to a ridge vent and some water leakage. And, we lost one shingle. :) Have our handyman here Saturday and all we back to good. :)

Oh, and it's COLD now. Fireplace will be kickin', YO!

I saw on FOXNews where they were interviewing a meteorologist who said these things run in 30-year cycles, and we're about halfway through this one, so we've got 15 years of this kind of weather yet until it slows down some. Just to let you know. . .

There isn't actually a heckuva lot of quality data. The meteorologist is drawing on a lot of conjecture. Additionally, a climatic period is defined as 30 years; that's the minimum generally used to confirm any sort of trend. By my reckoning, that means there's roughly 60 years of global weather data that could generally be considered as reliable. This would mean that we can confirm exactly two episodes or periods; one of which there were a heap of hurricanes, one of which there wasn't.

So, a 30 year cyclical eruption of hurricanes is a bit far-fetched for unbiased statistical confirmation.

Current data lends itself more toward there being further increase in both number of storms, and their intensity. Time will tell.

Glad you folks weathered her well. :D

Here's my take:

When there's a storm, I prepare. When there isn't I goof off. :)

Meteorologists are like economists. Half bet one way, half bet the other way.

You have a 50/50 shot. And, when you're wrong, no one remembers. ;)

Btw: Nice sig NC :)

Hi Panz :)

I do not understand why you don't move.

I think you're brave to stay but I'd move somewhere nature isn't as extreme :)

Because there's no place nicer when the weather is nice, which is most of the time.

Also, we don't have state or local taxes. :)

We always have the option of taking off (like we did twice last year) when there is a nasty one. What we leave behind can all be replaced. Friends and family can't.
