PATRONS NEED TO TEACH YOUNG VASSALS HOW TO SURVIVE!
Hi all..
I think this is a real important issue.
Vassals should know survival skills by level 50. Many of us {I've been guilty of this too} work hard to get vassals up to 50 so they can level fast. However, we tend to go soft on what we learnt levelling up, with the new XP-love now.
If a mage doesn't know how to heal/stam-to/mana/drain/shoot etc.. chain-casting, then he/she isn't going to survive. It's us who will suffer with all the corpse-retrieval requests.
If a melee doesn't know how to heal fast, replace stamina and keep doing it while killing, he/she will die fast.
Also, if neither know a monster's vulnerabilities, he/she will die fast.
Phred and I have been talking on this, and are making an active effort to see younger ones inexperienced at the game, learn these survival skills.
I think all patrons need to concentrate on this more.

I agree with you.
By powerleveling someone, you are doing them a disservice (except for rerolls). They don't learn the game and how it's played.

Agreed - although nowadays "teaching a mage to survive" usually means "teach how to use ElTank". And with the evolution of the tool more and more archers and even melees are using it...
Add that to the buffbots and then try to be surprised if real newbies do not really have a clue about Dereth at a level where we "old ones" already had suffered and learned sufficiently.
You dont need to be powerleveled by your patron to "not learn the game" - just use those "improvements" and you level faster than you should to really learn the game.
On the other hand you cannot deny those "improvements" to players just because they are inexperienced, like "teaching them AC the hard way"... I think its a sort of dilemma...

Trek I completely disagree!
It is the dependence on plugins that has created to many quickly powerful people who don't really understand the game.
People need to start this game without decal and whatnot. They need to figure stuff out. Work thru those newbie dungeons and newbie quests.
Giving people cash is OK. They can be the best stuff they find in shops, but beyond that, people need to become independent and knowledgable before they move on to the fast-level-gain track.
Don't get me started on buff bots! What a horrible idea for non-rerolls!
And it isn't teaching them AC the hard way - its the only way! The buffbot/gear/powerlevel play isn't teaching them AC at all!

Well things will never be like when I first swore to Trekman. My toon only have item magic and I had a ball. The game is very differant now and its pretty darn hard to expect the new players to learn like we did.

Raging Fists, lvl 126+ MeleeD/War Mage
Unbridled Rage, lvl 126+ Spearman of Doom
Raging Hound, lvl 105+ Melee Archer
Whenever reason or planning will not save the day perhaps a little RAGE will carry you through.

I am willing to give people lessons on how to actually play a mage (old school may not be as "uber" but damned its alot easier to survie by solo) but if you ask me you had better be willing to learn.. becuase I am slightly militaristic about how I teach em....and I test how much you want o learn before I actually take ya out to my "over gimped" house of learning

I'm thinking about not thinking which when you think about it really makes the whole thing kind of thoughtless.

It is SO much easier to learn the game now!
Those huge training halls, BOATLOADS of easy quests!
No components to keep stocked!
No spell recipes to figure out!
Amazing, yet not "uber" loot lying around shops all over!

A friend of mine got me started on this game and he helped me learn alot about being an archer. My first archer wasn't to my liking so he helped roll another one and by that point I knew what I wanted in one so now I'm a 3 school archer and do pretty good if I do say so myself. It's been a long road and frustrating but I finally hit lvl 40 recently. I'm glad he didn't pl me through the lvls. I learned alot and I see no point in playing the game if I can't go out there and play in other groups or solo. It's so important to learn how to survive on your own, at least with your first toon.

Hmmm. I'm about to ramble on about this topic so leave now if you expect anything witty or meaningful.Been playing over a year. Level 66 now and have done it solo (unless you count the buffbots as a partner; ok, I was in a fellow twice for xp, once in BSD and one with the big boys in which I died in like 30 seconds). I love the buffbots.
They allow me to go places where my lowly gimp butt shouldnt be and enjoy the game without that pesky "death" thingy. They also allow me to experiment with different attacks and methods that would surely get me killed without those precious buffs.I believe many new players put entirely to much effort into achieving a higher lever in order to participate with the people that got them started in the game. And whats up with all the dungeon hunting? Man, there's nothing I enjoy more than portaling somewhere new and just running and killing (or just running
). I have had more fun simply exploring Dereth than all the times I've leveled in a musty ol dungeon. So, in closing, each player has a goal. Some want to level quickly, so they share the game with a friend, even if they miss out on the full experience of the game. Others, like myself, just enjoy playing. I have played and still know nothing, but I'm happy and still enjoy the game.
If anyone would like to explore the island, give me a hollar. Can't provide protection or help in any way and will only promise a limited supply of xp, but I can promise you some of the most lovely scenery to be found and a steady flow of conversation (albeit not witty or meaningful).

My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am.

I think another good point is if you dont have the time or the means...dont take the vassel to begin with....Your job as a patron is to teach...be their mentor .. friend....and provider...
Standing around like i always do...ive had more than one ask me questions and id check their patron and ask why they dont ask them and they hadnt seen them in ages.....
Make sure yur vassels at least play on your time zone so you can connect once in a while there....

Wait, Urrasa, let me get this straight...
Someone asked you for help, and when you asked about their patron, they said they have not seen them in ages??
Hmmmmm Let me guess...
Killer Sam
Webscar
K'ven
Pac-Man
All the same guy... I would put money on the fact that he has HotKeys set up with...
"Can you help me?"
"My patron has not logged on in months."
And, my personal favorite...
"Can someone ask Pee-Wee why he has me squelched?"
Oh yes, how I love the "@Squelch -Account" command.
(Ok Tynerion, you can stop laughing now hahahaha)

Well lets look at it from the Poop's approach. Myself personally. I HAVE MULES for vassals, minus my chain vassal. No need for the nagging of vassals. I like my loot, I like my money, and BY JOVE I love my Majors. And they are all MINE! MINE MINE MINE MINE! And I am freely accepting gifts.

P.S. I don't drain. But that could be because the mobbies I fight resist drains.
