Configuring new machine

Got a new comp. Nice one for a change rather than something 2yrs out of date.
Anyway, downloading all the decal apps and AC software is a chore. Should perhaps be finished this evening. Regardless, my credit should hold me for a bit while I sort this through.
What's a good free firewall besides ZoneAlarm and does anyone else know of free spyware protection besides spybot S&D? I'm having probs downloading spybot S&D upgrades and can't figure if it's XP or if I've already been infected and I'm being blocked from downloading the latest database by malicious software.
You see, I share the machine with my wife and she window shops online.
