Windows 2000 Professioinal question

Ok all you win2k gurus out there.. got me a question that technet doesn't seem to want to answer after my 20 mins of fast lazy skimming

trying to make it so my win98 computer doesn't have to log in to my win2k machine to share files over the network.. both are in the same workgroup.

I know its prolly easy but can't seem to get my brain around it this early in the morning

But honestly I'm not quite sure. Networking wasn't something I was very good at in college.

You have to clarify a few things.

Is the 98 machine just mapping to a drive on the W2K machine?
Is this your personal machine, in other words, do you have a need for strict user login security?

What exactly do you mean by connecting/sharing files.
How exactly are you connecting them now.

Phade, I'm not sure exactly what it is you're wanting to do. If you're wanting to share files between a 98 machine and a 2000 machine, have you tried creating a username and password that is the same on each machine? The 98 shares won't really use usernames but the credentials of who the 98 user is might pass over to the 2000 box when it is accessed from across the network. I can't really remember since it's been a long time since I've tried used 98.

Do you want to limit access, or just let anyone in that is on your network?

If security doesn't matter, default share is Everyone has Full Control.

But, to be a little better, create a local user on the 2K machine, and log in to the 98 machine using that info.

And sometimes it is necessary to enable the guest account under W2k to gain access from Win98 machines (for example if it asks for a password for the IPC$ share)

If you do not want to use an account :

1) Ensure that the W2K File Share has "Full Control" rights for "Everyone" (thats the default)

2) If the shared files on W2K are on an NTFS partition, ensure that "Everyone" has "Full Control" on the share root folder (with option "all files and subfolders" in folder's Properties -> Security)

3) Enable the Guest account in Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups

Although you do not use an account to access the share, you have to start Win98 with some (local) user login. If you just press ESC at the login screen Win98 loads in "local mode" and the routines necessary for any network share access are not activated.

If you want to use an account :

1) create it on the W2K Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups

2) if files are on an NTFS partition, leave the file Share definition unchanged (Everyone/Full Control) and

3) add the created user with "Full Control" rights to the File Security of the folder (with option "all files and subfolders")

When logging into W98 don't forget to use the username
{W2K-PCname}\{username}

But in a closed home-network the first version probably is better...
