http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm
top right of the page.. click on scan now. i used this page for years while i had Norton on my machine.. This scan always found hundreds more viruses, pop ups and spyware that Norton missed. After using this free version for a couple years i finally broke down and bought it. WOW.. now I have no problems. Could also be i am the only one who uses my computer now too and i only go to the same places.. but it is a great page and by very trusted people. McAfee is well known and trusted. Good luck and I hope all turns out well.

Pop up stopper and general prophylactic. Always on, requires manual updating.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Best free virus scanner there is IMO

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy. For anything that gets through. Requires manual running and updating.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Per ... l&tag=top5

Adaware, for anything not covered by the above, like certain tracking cookies. Manual running and updating required.

If you're not using Firefox as your browser, get it here: http://www.mozilla.com/

And install this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/m ... .php?id=10

You'll even be able to regulate what images are displayed on the VN.

Enjoy!

Watch out tho, alot of the $$ ones ARE if fact spyware themselves. Go with Grisoft (AV for free), MS Antispyware or Spybot S&D, those are totally clean. :)

There is a freeware program out there called HiJackThis. This little program will beat down any broswer hijacking software you run into in addition to a few programs out there that most of the adware/spyware/virus tools do not pickup. The other program I would recommed is Spybot. Turn that on and it constantly watches for changes. Any requests to update things like your registy get a little popup box asking you to OK it. That way, even if she downloads and installs games that come with adware, she can plan the game without allowing the adware to ecome active ;) Spybot has been a lifesaver with computers I let my kids on. I just tell them to click no to anything it says and so far, 18 months later, still 0 problems :)
