HONOR THE VETERAN
by: Sunny Paula Barnhart USMC

Veterans are easy to recognize
By their special swagger
And their shattered eyes
By the way they stand so tall
When the flag is raised
And how they bow their head
When the Lord is praised.
They may have clabbered voices
And brown and mottled skin
A missing arm or leg or eye
But you can see the youth within.
What horrors did they see
What hell did they endure
To keep my flag and liberty secure?
What would our nation be like
Without veterans such as these?
Let us remember each of them
When we bow our knees
And may we give all reverence due
To the brave men and women
Who defend the Red, White and Blue.

Be proud! And thank you!

I'd hate to be speaking German!

Do remember though how people suffered in Europe and how many helped in the resistance - getting intelligence and bombing crucial military installations!

It was a combined effort - Churchill and YOUR President (from a wheelchair - IMPRESSIVE!) did the job!

Edit (after calming down) :

I just want to emphasize that I *do* speak German (well, sort of...) and that it is nothing to be ashamed of...

And I refrain from discussing the fact that the involvement of the four Signatories (Britain, France, USA, Russia) in the war was by no means only altruistic/unselfish....

Trekman speaks the truth (talking about the last part of his post, as I can only guess about his choice of language ;) ). Even though the higher-up powers in the governments involved had multiple reasons for being at war, and the policy makers might should be scolded rather than praised, that misses the point of this thread, I think.

Veterans Day here in the States (I am guessing, and hoping, that other countries have something similar) is a day set aside to honor the veterans, not the politicians. That was what the focus of the thread was meant to be.

tng, clearly not all Germans in the wars were bad, and not all "Allies" were good. Trekman, I'm sorry for the unintentional projectile that was thrown in your direction by thenetworkgod. :(

The intent of the day is simply to honor U.S. veterans for what they have done and continue to do, not to put anyone else down. :)

History of Veterans Day:
World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.

Let me rephrase:

I'D HATE TO BE FORCED TO SPEAK GERMAN!

Trek, I assume you got my drift - unless you like the guy that started WW2? :p

"WW1 started because an Austrian was shot, WW2 started because an Austrian was NOT shot...."

- Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austrian Emperor
- Hitler was born in an Austrian village

My native tongue is Viennese - an Austrian dialect but basically German.

See? I started to guess that Trek had adopted Klingon, or Romulan, or maybe whatever those cute little Tribbles probably spoke to each other. ;)

Viennese is probably a lot more practical...

WW2 started because an Austrian was NOT shot....
Actually, WWII started in the early 30's with Japan invading China. :) Although, in Europe it was when Hitler invaded Poland.

And, I don't know Klingon or Romulan. But, I think that's a good thing. :D
