As you may or may not know I do construction. So I was working with Luke
(my boss) today and being that I had just finished welding was beginning to
grid off the excess. I turned to Luke and said "Hey isn't that contact
cement you are using famable?" To which he replied "No not that bad it
should be fine." So being the trusting person I am I put back in my ear
plugs and contiued the grinding. I was worried
Just to give you a little atmosphere, we were working at a resurant which
is was to open in a couple of days. We were puting in a counter top and a
deco railing which should only take two or three days.

Well, next thing I know I'm squwating next to a fire ball.
Since I was standing near the only open door I grabbed the 4 X 8 sheet of
burning formica and drug it out the front door and threw it on the sidewalk.
Then I ran back in to see another smaller sheet in flames and watch the
partially closed gallon can of cement burst into flames. I grabbed the sheet
with can in tow thinking the can would stick, 'cause contact cement sticks
to everything, only to have it slide off on to the, thankfully, tile floor.
Just then I here Luke yell my name and I get a face full of fire
extinguisher dust. I stumbled outside coughing and noticed I had a burning
roller in my hand. Fearing another onslot of extinguisher I dropped it to
the ground. Luke returned and put that out too.

After ten minutes the firemen arrived to get all of the extinguisher fog
out of the place.

This place is only part of a five story building that was subsequintly
evacuated only to add to our embaresment. There was only a bit of wall that
showed signs of fire but that was wiping off with a wet towel.

One would hope that this was the end of our story, one would be wrong.

So we get back to work Luke starts with the contact cement and I said "well
what should I do now?" To which he says "I'll move this over here around the
counter (which means it will be about twenty feet away and on the other side
of the curved counter)and you can keep grinding it should be fine."
I was concerned.

Four feet by eight feet. That's 32 sqare feet.

That's a lot of area to watch burst into flame especally in a room with ten
foot ceiling, it was f**king scary even from twenty feet away.

I yell "LUKE" who runs from behind me as I run to grab this flaming thing,
AGAIN, and Luke throws something on it to smother the flames. The flames
billow.
Luke runs though the flames in shorts (Luke the amasing ladies and
gentlemen he'll be here all week, try the shrimp) grabs the fire extiguisher
and puts out the fire..... then the sprinkler system goes off and continues
to go off for the next thirty minutes until I call the fire department and
ask for them to return (the fire alarm had not reset from the previous
fire). They were not pleased and asked us not to return to work for the
rest of the day.

Luke has second degree burns on his legs, he probably will not go to the
hospital, and may try to come to work tomarrow.

I'm just tired and really want to say "I told you."

My recommendation is not to let Luke play with contact cement again. ;)

I'm glad you guys weren't hurt. (Well, in Luke's case not hurt any worse than he was, since doing the fire dance while in shorts could easily have resulted in worse than second degree burns.)

That contact cement sounds like fun stuff!

Never heard of it, is it like superglue mixed with cement or something?

Pics?! :P

Wow. I'm glad you are OK. And, from now on, only use Elmer's School Glue. :)

No pics. Corey didn't get any.

Wasn't me either. I wouldn't have been grinding on a weld near a gallon of napalm!

Here a link to one type of contact cement Zataki. There are many types and sizes of containers available; some are flammable, and some are not. Contact cement is good stuff lol.
