Interesting response
Marine Corps General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio the other
day {several years ago} and you have to read his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this!!!! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview
between a female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military
installation.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?
GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous
activity to be teaching children?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.
GENERAL REINWALD: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're
not one, are you?
The radio went silent and the interview ended. You gotta love the
Marines!

Seen that before a year or two ago (maybe more). Never seen a date other than "the other day". If I could find it, I'd request a transcript of the exchange from NPR and frame it.
I was carrying a shotgun and hunting squirrels at 5yrs old. So were many of my childhood classmates. No one ever "went Columbine" and none have ever been arrested for any sort of violent crime.

We have much more restricted firearms laws here in Austria or Europe.
But I guess that is not because we here are "militant gun haters" or "overprotective to society".
I rather think it is because we have had a very different history during the last centuries. We did not have the "Wild West" where weapons were essencially needed to populate a continent (all the injustices against Indian populations aside - hundreds of years ago swords were used here for the same). Hence firearms did not become such a "tradition" here.
The female -> prostitute example is a funny one - but at the same time you could use car drivers as well. They are equipped with very deadly weapons.....
Whenever someone is guilty in an accident that costs lives because he was drunk or did phone+eat and did not pay attention while driving he is essentially a killer. Do you forbid all cars now ?
Nevertheless there is an aspect of the American firearm discussions that look a bit weird from here - how the "gun lobby" (dont know the name) including several celebrities like Charlton Heston tend to make fools of themselves. For instance I saw some reports from weapon fairs in the US that made me believe they must be a hoax - people could never possibly behave like that....but apparently they do...
Although the interview basically is funny - the interviewer's question has some grain of truth : how and when are children influenced the most to get violent.
It is natural that children form their character through influences from their vicinity - after all that is the main aspect of childhood.
And they do it primarily - but not only - from the direct family.
Basically all those Rating efforts are covering that for TV, movies, games,....so why not for weapons ?
Isn't it rediculous to put a Rating (i.e. age restriction) for the use of language or the exhibition of body parts, but not for weapons ?
In that respect I do understand why she asked it - but of course not the way she did.....
We have those discussions here too. And we also hear the same "The weapon does not kill. The person who pulls the trigger does". Well - that is not very helpful for the victims....
As far as I remember now there is at least one major massacre in some school in the US per year - and it also happened in Germany some time ago.
And guess what - firearms were used. True - if firearms were forbidden and difficult enough to get those pupils might have been as violent.
But you have to admit that with a slingshot or even a knife they would not have been as effective.

I'm not sure the interview is real. While the message is clear, I don't know that it's authentic.
The U.S. is a much younger nation than any in Europe. The history is fairly easy to follow. Without firearms, we would be having "Tea".
While, I agree somewhat with the Indians statement, it isn't entirely true. The Americans certainly were not angels, but many tribes, for years, were brutalizing peaceful tribes. Apaches would be considered terrorists today. Most, if not all, nations in Europe did similar things in there histories. It was just longer ago.
Raping and pillaging wasn't invented in the Americas. In fact, scalping was something the Indians learned from the Spaniards. They also wiped out an entire people in South America.
Vikings (of which I am a descendant) were merciless for years. Quick, efficient and silent killers. They killed everyone in their paths. We don't chastize Norway for that. If weren't for the Vikings, York (not New York) would be a different place.
I do own firearms. I goto the range now and then. I get to go through the SWAT course (it's good to have friends in law enforcement
) and shoot at fake bad guys and such. But, i'm not a hunter. I don't look down on those that do. I just see very little sport in hiding in a tree and waiting for a deer to walk passed you, as you scope in on him from 100 feet away. Now, killing a buck with a knife--now, that would be a sport! So, I choose not to wake up at 3am and spray deer pee all over myself and rub dirt on my face.
I do my hunting at Publix (grocery store). I always bring something home and I don't have to hang it upside down from a tree.
Now, I will enjoy the spoils of a hunt, I just prefer not to participate. But, in all fairness, I don't enjoy fishing either. Unless, it's deep sea fishing. That, I like. I've gone fishing with Keebler where I just cast a hook with no bait. hehe -- The whole process bores me. I'm there for the company. Again, when I go fishing at Publix, I always catch something and I don't have to lose a tackle box worth of loot to the rock gods.
We have ratings for everything nowadays, but we shouldn't rely on the government to tell us what's right or wrong for our children. Nothing beats a good parent, but today we seem to be so pre-occupied with ourselves that we let the TV or the Internet raise our kids and some even EXPECT the educational system to raise our kids. I guess that gives us someone else to blame if things do turn out like we expected.
I know ALOT of gun owners and I would dare say that the grand majority of them are responsible people.
There are FAR more good people in this world than bad.
We just hear more about the bad ones.

But, at least women didn't equip themselves to be women, they were born that way - but men tend to keep on finding evil ways to kill each other for no apparent reason apart from either greed, muscle, power or just plain stupidity. Those are qualities I'd like my future son to be to not be too keen about mastering

Face it; its *NOT* macho to be an idiot!*

Ah, but those brutal men only devised those skills which you condem for the feeding and protection of their families. Probably too, it was at the urgings of the woman. Thinkaboutit!

It does that to me too sometimes Nctayl, especially if it tends to be one of my "longer" posts. I think it's a board timeout issue. As a safeguard, I tend to copy my entire post to the clipboard before hitting the submit button (just in case!) and then if I do have to log in again, at least I can simply paste in the content and still subject everyone to the fruits of my labor.
