 Holy ... Look at all the replies! Well I started a hot topic. :o

Kero very funny abut Pipi's patron being little.. It's like I say.. Little Pipi. ;)

I am guilty of power-levelling.. and in a some cases, with vassals who have said they are experienced, usually claiming to have played on another server. I've found that they are not experienced, and can't even survive alone. So either they never learnt on the other server, or their experience is a 'little exaggerated'.

I've decided to lay off the power-levelling until I am absolutely sure they can survive alone.

On the same grounds I disagree with leaving them to do it alone, if they are asking for help. I'm not talking about power-levelling here... A patron has a duty to teach vassals, and assist them in their efforts...

I quote Urrasa here:
.Urrasa. wrote:I think another good point is if you dont have the time or the means...dont take the vassel to begin with....Your job as a patron is to teach...be their mentor .. friend....and provider...
Urrasa is right.. If you don't intend to help your vassals, why'd you become a patron in the first place?

Note I say though - assist them with 'their' efforts. You can only help and teach those willing to learn and willing to try for themselves.

You have to balance it. Watch out for over-dependence! I'm a softie, and I'm learning this lesson the hard way... and it's taken me a long while to learn it...

My patron - Flanker - pointed out something important to me..

When taking a vassal, decide before they swear what they expect of you, and what you will do. You can say no to power-levelling and in newbie cases, or inexperienced {no matter how experienced they claim to be}, I think saying no to power-levelling is the way to go.

I think the most important thing I've learnt, is you're their PATRON. It' is your duty to MENTOR them. Teach them what they are willing to learn from you. However you need to observe, find out what they are capable of, and balance it so they don't become over-dependent on you. That spoils the game for you and for them.

Hmmm... All these opinions are good ones, now something eneds to be done. I suggest a training session for all those newbs out there. I would be glad to help. We could go on a hunting session with them, very few buffs if any. Maybe level 1s-3s and have them raise that stuff which will help them the most. I dunno, any ideas would be helpful. I wasn't given that much help in the early levels, I've done most stuff on my own. All my patrons were many levels above me so I wasn't able to hunt with them, and they were mostly unable to buff me. Yes, I use the buffbots CONSTANTLY! Those are, unfortunately, a must for me. I've mostly focused on my bow skill and I'm working on my life skill so I can buff myself with life. I don't have critter tho, will get it at 75, which is awhile away, so for those with that problem, I can try to help out. I haven't ever used plug-ins, stupid graphics cards, and it hasn't hindered me in anyway. I agree with Lagmatic totally, except for the buffbots part. Try taking someone who has totally run their game on plugins, and giving them a Voodoo 3DFX Banshee Graphics card, lol. It'll be a whole new world. I hope some of this helps.

P.S. - I'm not gone .... yet

Lot's of interesting posts. I haven't been playing the game terribly (4-5 months), and I saw early on that because AC has been around for a while, getting powerful is a science. That being said, I tried to do as much as possible for myself. I rerolled toons many times, and my current toon quickly got over 100 deaths before i finally decided that buff bots were the thing. The simple fact is, unbalanced (uber) template toons CAN'T survive the lower levels at all without high level buffs, and newbies will always get pwned trying to play these types of characters. If you want to make a toon that can survive without the use of buff bots and power levelling, then you should probably have at most 1 stat at 100, and a decent endurance of 30-40 unlike most toons who start with endurance of 10. 10 endurance=5 hp  . As a patron, i would never recommend my vassal take an uber template unless you want to do body recover every time you sign on. Anyway, that's one of the problems I see happening. Patrons, teach you vassals to make toons that can survive even if their uber buffs run out, and tell them not to try to make an uber character their first try.

I understand what you mean Rath, but half the fun of this game, for me, was taking KyleBaby's gimp butt all over dereth and getting killed. When I got the game, I had NO idea how to set up a char... Tynerion called me and said "Go into Solclaim"... that was IT for instructions for me. I ended up with a war mage... gimped beyond belief (ask anyone who knows KyleBaby). It took me forever to get him to lev 54, and this was before the sellback patch (and no Melee Def).

Anyway. Even now, with Pee-Wee, who was created before the sellback patch, I maxed his endurance, just so he wouldn't get killed as easy to start with.

It's all a learning process. Believe me, you are going to look back and enjoy the fact that you didn't make 126 in 3 months. I've been playing this game for quite a while now, and Pee-Wee is my highest level char.

I also have to admit, sometimes it does rub me the wrong way (especially when openly pointed out to me), that people level to 65 70+ in less than a month. Not rerolls, noobs.

It's a great game, why rush to get bored with it? There are still places I have not been in Dereth. People are not looking at it like that anymore, they look at it as Levels.

I say, tell the newbs to take a deep breath and run to see Babe the giant blue auroch (and watch them leave corpses on the way).

Enjoy it.

One more thing. I have a wonderful Patron in Neuslayer. She has always been supportive and available to help in anyway (lesson one, always say nice things about your patron. ). I believe the one thing that has helped me the most, believe it or not, is the fact that we are on two completely different shifts, which means I have to fend for myself. Not having someone there to hold your hand 24-7 is a good thing. :) I havnt made her rich with xp, but I'm sure she'd agree that I'm one vassel thats not very demanding. :)
My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am.

I'm not surprised that Neu is such a wonderful patron. She is also a wonderful friend. :) Good job Neuslayer!! :)

Being a patron is about being there for one's vassals, for help and support, and it's good to see.

Oh and Pipi... So sorry to hear that Ifferz only gives you poop.. If Little Pipi needs help I'm here. ;)
