Tokyo surpassed Mexico City as the most populated city in the world in the late 1990's. I don't know if it's the most DENSELY populated, but it certainly has the most people...

I think deodorant and breath mints should be required by Japanese law

You are right Scyon, however the most densely populated can be calculated a number of ways. We were pretty much using official census data (which is completely suspct in some areas) and official square footage of the metropolitan area only (not suburbs, or some US cities would be ranked up there)

Of course that means some smaller cities may be more densely populated, but don't have the sheer size of the ones listed. We had a few others, but they were too far spead out to be included (a few Indian and Chinese cities)

I honestly didn't expect so much of a response so heres my reasoning behind it:

We were debating this on the basis that while easily communicable diseases (like this bugger SARS) may not originate in crowded cities, the severe lack of health/sanitary facilities in said population centers create an epidemic that could be controlled. Of course that lead to another argument about how should pay for healthcare . . . blah blah blah, but we still have a nice bet going on the most densely populated city.

(I picked Mexico, so I'm winning according to this poll :))

Thanks for the input folks!
