Interest check : Pawn Shop

Post by luang » Fri Jul 11, 2003 6:39 pm

I would like to introduce a new service. But I'm testing the water in the LD first.

Did you ever see an auction for an item you really wanted ? But that auction only takes sing keys, and you don't have enough at the moment ?

I can lend you the sing keys.

You give me something of value, we agree on a price, and I give you the sing keys. You can pay off your auction.
After some time, you come back to me, give me the sing keys back, and I give you your item back.

Example : You have a chance to buy an 186% AR xbow for 48 sing keys, but you don't have the sing keys right now.
You give me your Major Creature Helm, and I give you 48 sing keys. With those sing keys, you can buy the 186% AR xbow.
After a month, when you have collected enough new sing keys, you come back to me. You give me the 48 sing keys back, I give you your Major Creature Helm back.

For Last Dynasty member, this would be a free service. If there is enough interest, I will extend this service to all of Solclaim. Of course, non-LD'ers will have to pay an extra sing key commission.

Would there be an interest in this service ?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Just remember one thing. Pawn shops are FULL of stuff that was pawned and never recovered. You're going to wind up with a lot of stuff as well as a few sings. And if you don't set a definite time limit and stick to it even with friends, you'll wind up with all your mules storing other people's stuff for them.

I hope you can make it work. Just cover all your bases, and be prepared for a few irate customers.

No, I'll ask Khaz to PK them. Either that or I'll let Pee-Wee spam them...

You have a fully loaded PeeWee, and you aren't afraid to use it?
I should have stayed in hibernation for at least another month.

You have to give them 3 chances. After the 1st month, they wake up to find an olthoi head on their pillow. After the 2nd month, you send Nauscicaa's avatar to visit them. Then if they haven't paid by the 3rd month, send in Pee-Wee!!

If an item is important to me, for instance because I use it, I will not be able to give it away for a complete month (or another realistic timeframe to get so many sings).
If the item is not important to me, for instance because it is really cool but I have no need or possibility to use it, I will not bother to buy it back for so many sings.
If the item was meant for an auction anyway I would be glad about the "buyout" you gave me and ride into the sunset with the sings....

So although the idea itself is definitely good, as Jot said you might run into problems with orphaned items. You could auction them yourself for the lost sings, but you have additional work and risk...

You would have to be very cautious in estimating the sing value of the given items...

Although I do not buy much from tradebots and even less from auctions I would appreciate such a pawn shop because I do not "hunt in advance" for smalls, sings or whatever the currency of the day is....
